In reality you will do a lot of things through a default battle event, so you shouldn't be hesitant to do so. You can use event nodes to make your default battle less cramped.
Yeah, best way is to either use the status value events or a general battle event that's used by all abilities/items.
The status value event will be the easiest way to do it :)
