When a character uses an item, I'd like them to hold the item they are about to use over their head before the ability in question begins. How could I facilitate something like this?
That'd be done in the battle events used to animate the item. You'll have to set up the prefab in the battle event like a regular prefab.

In the same way the tutorial show how to make sparks when a combatant is hit... rearange the event so that instead of a spark it is the item, and arrange the timing so that the item is displayed before use, rather than upon impact.
