Aren't the animations for the Unity sprites simple animations that can be used like the ones for 3D? There's no difference for ORK if it's 2D or 3D :)

I am using Mecanim for sprites with ORK in my new project : ). Works like a charm. I really love that the framework treats everything equally in that aspect, it's nice not having to relearn stuff.
Wouldn't be a good idea to create a completely new way for treating animations, when there's everything handled nicely by Unity :D
