Experience Points and Leveling

I have my XP set to NOT level. I want to train to level. However, if I get more XP than needed amount for the next level, the extra amount of XP is lost. Is there a way to prevent this? I know in original D&D and AD&D, any XP gains over the next level minimum was lost. So, I can live with it. Not sure how many others can :)

i.e. Gain 100xp only need 50xp for the next level, we have 50xp. The other 50 is gone

Hi! ^^ If you are planning a system like M&M, i did something similar in September before stopping the development. My workout actually initialized the experience to 0, but it did that using parameters, because i wanted the player to level up its characters only by visiting trainers! So i customized the system this way (sorry, i cannot yet provide you a detailed information because it is a 6-months old feature and i could miss something, but i am willing to give you a deeper explanation if needed!):

i created experience stat
i created another stat EXPtoLevel (hidden)
I used formulas to check if EXP > ExptoLevel
i even used a HUD that display if a character had the chance to level up Then the player could visiti the trainer and i set up a dialogue:
The trainer check if Exp > Exp to level (i repeated this check for all 3 characters, repeating nodes, but maybe it could be done more easily)
The trainer ask if the character wanna level up
Trainer check if there are enough money (scaled with a formula depending the level)
The character levels up!
Experience is set to EXPtoLevel, EXPtolevel raises accordingly. At this point, you could just set current Exp at EXPtoLevel + remaining exp from previous level. I do hope it can help you. :) In case, i am available for further doubts! ^^

Yeah, when not using level up in experience, any value exceeding the maximum will be lost (as expected). Since you don't really need different EXP borders for different levels in that case, you could just have a high max EXP for all levels instead :)

Decided to leave it as is for now until I get some feedback when I start testing. Thanks for the suggestions
