I was wondering if ORK could handle a system similar to Chrono Trigger, with enemies found on the map and fought in that spot, rather than the Chrono Cross\Final fantasy style. I still haven't grasped (demo) how powerful the animation editor is, for that purpose.

not really only thing to watch out for is placement of the turned based battle area its not off the map at all you dont want to spawn stuff in the wrong areas
As per @wtyson's comment, you might want to look at using multiple handplaced battle arena's in your levels, and having the battle use the closest one in proximity to the enemy. You'd avoid then any weird edge cases of enemies hanging off the map, floating in space, or being underground. If you've got enough of them, it'll look and behave pretty closely to CT.
