E.g. when using Mecanim, could be an issue with transitions. It could also be an issue with ground detection by the character controller (e.g. related to the slope). Also, try enabling Use Position Change in the combatant's movement settings.

Could it be that i didn't have a fall animation properly setup ?
Now that i have one this seems to not happen anymore.
