just wondering if it is possible (i'm sure its possible, but is there an easy way) to set up a world map. Similar to the world map in the old squaresoft games. eg final fantasy. I'm guessing you would really just need to change the player character for one scene.

It would just be how you set up the scene. You would typically have a more distant camera.

Yeah, simply create a scene with your world map with a bunch of scene changers and spawn points for the different locations :)
