I assume this is for the same setup as in the other topic - so using Mecanim. As said there, for Mecanim it's better to use the auto move speed parameters instead of auto animations.
This sets a parameter to the move speed of the combatant and lets you play animations based on that, e.g. a blend tree playing them.
