Use Mecanim Animation: When using magic and items, you cannot play projected animations and use animations. When you add a cast (use) animation to Combatants-Defend Animation, you can play it.
I'd need more information on your specific setup. ORK can only tell Mecanim to set a parameter or play an animation, but that doesn't automatically make Mecanim do that (e.g. missing transitions).
Sometimes it helps adding a small wait before an animation (Wait node, e.g. 0.1 second wait). E.g. when playing an attack animation after running to the target, the transition from run to idle animation can cancel out the attack animation.
