Equipping items without using the Item Box

Hi everyone, I've been struggling with this one for the better part of the evening and I just can't seem to find a way around it.

When I select an item from my inventory, I then have to select it from the Item Box, and then select the equipment slot to actually equip it. I was wondering if there was some settings to bypass that box and equip the item (sword, armor, etc) straight from the inventory GUI?
What's the Item Box used for?

    If your inventory menu screen's Default Action is set to use, it'll allow you to directly equip it on a selected combatant (or the screen's user if Use Screen Combatant is enabled).
