The idea would be sorting out the upgrades (abilities, stats, shortcuts...) and saving the changes before starting the actual game, without spawning any combatants.
  • Not before starting the game, but when starting a new game, you can use menu screens, e.g. in your start schematic.

    E.g. add a combatant to the player group, use a Call Menu Screen node to open the menu - player can do stuff in it - and once the menu is closed, the schematic continues and you can spawn the player.
