edited April 2015 in ORK Support
Hi all. I'm brand new to this, still in the design and planning stage. I'm wondering what support if any ORK has for world maps and using them to travel, the way it's done in many JRPGs. I've seen the post on minimapping, but that's not what I'm looking for.

Apologies if this is a stupid question but I couldn't find anything about this in the tutorials or how-tos.

  • world maps are something you would have to set up out side or ork if you cant script you can use things like playmaker to do this

  • Thanks. I could code up a world map system myself, the question for me now is whether I want to spend the time doing so or design differently.
  • if you use the new ui for your map system should be simple an quick if your just doing a over world map just set buttons as your location and use those buttons to load your scenes just have ork spawn points in the scenes

  • Could you make an example of what your world map should be like, in comparison to game map?

If you simply consider it as a new scene, with encounters and scene changers that link to dungeons/cities/etc, i think is really doable. I think it is possible with not so much effort even to change player prefab considering it is in world map.

My world map is simply another scene that links to subscene, it is a simply 2d game, so my character is the same, but the tileset used is different.

    :)
  • A 'map' scene sounds right. I was thinking of no character in the scene and selecting location by clicking, I suppose basically it's just a UI screen which I update as locations get discovered. But I like the idea of switching to a 2D character that the player moves around the map, thanks.
  • They are both valid alternatives, i prefer a more dinamic solutionwith interactable areas and moving player, buth even a static world map unlocked by progress could be valid too. However, i think they can both be done with small effort.
If you have still doubts, just ask. :-)
  • You can create things like map scenes (or even games without a spawned player) with ORK. The Interaction start type (e.g. event interactions, scene changers, etc.) also works with clicking/touching on the game objects. Setting the Max Click Distance setting in the Game Settings (or the individual interactions) to -1 will not check for the player's distance to the interaction.
