events and current menu user question

Is there a way in an event to use the currently selected party member like the current menu user?
I looked through the events and didn't see anything.
Right now, I am using a dialog with the choices of the party members to select. It would make things cleaner and easier if I could just select my party member like I do for menu use (click on portrait in my case)
